CPEN NY Event: Healthcare Private Equity Panel

Basic Event Description:  A panel of private equity health care investors will discuss the potential impact that current reform could have on investment opportunities in the sector.

New York Chapter

CPEN New York was launched in 2007 and has rapidly grown its membership base and hosted several events. The chapter consists of alumni in the New York metro area the from private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, fund of funds, mezzanine funds, and corporate venture communities. Currently CPEN NY is chaired by Amarish Mehta from Arcadia Capital.

Fellow CPEN-NY members joined for a discussion on fundraising strategies in the current environment moderated by Dechert. Panelists included Phil Pool, Managing Director of Navidar Group and Kristin Custar (’04), head of Investors Relations and Fundraising at The Jordan Company, and Randall Birks (’04),  Chief Investment Officer of Birinco Inc., a family office investing in Hedge Funds and Private Equity.

Wine Tasting, Networking and Presentation on a PE Firm’s Experience Acquiring and Managing A Winery
A Senior Portfolio Manager for Laurus Capital, Ira Glasser, described his firm’s experience acquiring and managing a winery, www.viansa.com <http://www.viansa.com/> , and then lead the group through a wine tasting.  This was followed by an open networking session.

Guest speaker AL Aria, Managing Director of GE Global Sponsor Finance gave a speech on how bank de-leveraging will impact the current credit crunch and how Private Equity firms will likely respond, followed by an interactive discussion.

CPEN-NY: Distressed Investing Panel
Moderator Scott Meadow and fellow Chicago Booth alumni met for a panel discussion on Distressed Investing followed by networking. They had a diverse group of speakers and a varied set of backgrounds and investment styles which contributed to an educational, informative, and relevant discussion.  The panel was followed by networking with GSB alumni in the Private Equity, Venture Capital, and Hedge Fund community.

CPEN New York: Reception with Professor Steve Kaplan
This event involved a private reception with Professor Steve Kaplan from 5:30 – 6:30pm.  It was followed by a discussion with Professor Kaplan who discussed details of his current research with time for Q&A.  Appetizers and beverages were provided.

CPEN-NYC: Discussion with Professor Raghuram Rajan
Professor Raghu Rajan, and fellow Chicago GSB alumni who are in the Private Equity, Venture Capital and Hedge Fund community led an intimate conversation on the State of the Private Equity industry. Given recent turmoil in the credit and subprime markets, this was a very timely and interesting discussion, and we were fortunate to have Professor Rajan share his perspective and insights with us. This private event immediately followed the GSB Business Forecast Luncheon scheduled from 11:30-2pm.
